  ACADEMIC PROGRAM
Mercy High School offers an academic program, which serves to prepare the student for post-secondary education and/or employment. In addition to courses that are required for graduation, Mercy offers many electives appropriate to individual interest and specific college and career decisions. All students are required to take a minimum of five credits each year in addition to credits earned in religion and physical education. Students may select additional elective course(s) for a maximum of seven credits each year. These additional electives are scheduled as class size and available periods permit.

Graduation Requirements

A minimum of twenty-two credits is required for graduation. In addition to credits earned in religious studies and physical education, all Mercy students are expected to complete the following:

English: a minimum of 4 credits
Mathematics: a minimum of 3 credits
Science: a minimum of 3 credits
Social Studies: a minimum of 2-1/2 credits (including 1 credit of U.S. History and 1/2 credit in Civics or Government)
World Language: a minimum of 2 credits
Technology: a minimum of 1/2 credit in computers
Health: 1/2 credit

All students must also fulfill the required service hours in order to graduate. Seniors are required to pass all courses during senior year in order to receive a diploma from Mercy High School.

COURSE LEVELS
There are three ability levels for the academic program for students:

College Prep
Advanced College Prep
Honors

The level at which the course is taught includes:

  • the pace, or how rapidly the course is taught
  • the amount of material covered
  • the depth of material which is taught
  • the difficulty of the textbook
  • the amount of independent study required

COL - College Prep - This level of coursework offers students a solid academic foundation for college. Courses are taught at a less rigorous pace than Advanced College Prep.

ADV - Advanced College Prep - This level of coursework offers students who qualify a strong academic foundation for college. Courses are taught at a more rigorous pace than College Prep.

H - Honors - This level of coursework is for students who have exceptional ability in a given area, have a high level of motivation, and strong competencies in verbal and written expression, abstract thinking and research skills. Honors courses prepare students for competitive four-year colleges.

AP - Advanced Placement - A fourth level, Advanced Placement, is available to juniors and seniors with superior academic ability who may earn college credit for courses in the advanced placement program.
