Mercy Track & Field Wins The SCC West Sectional Meet

Jan 25 2024

For the second straight year, the Mercy Track and Field team finished first place at the SCC West Sectional meet.
With a score of 91 points, the Tigers defeated Sacred Heart Academy by five points on Wednesday night. Career was third with 58 points.
It was Mercy's sixth sectional victory, and first back-to-back wins since the team won four straight from 2014 to 2017.
The Tigers grabbed wins in the 4x400 relay (Veronika Meriano ’26, Tess Wasiolek ’24, Maddie Scarfo ’27, and Marie Kane ’24), 4x800 relay (Eliana Fraschilla ’24, Bea Perrault ’26, Kayla Johnson ’25, and Heather Meisinger ’26), and sprint medley relay (Ella Barone ’26, Veronika Meriano ’26, Tess Wasiolek ’24, and Calista Nephew ’26). Mercy also picked up crucial points in the high jump and shot put with personal bests from Maddie Scarfo ’27 (second place, 4-10) and Nomara Guzman-Toro ’25 (fourth place, 29-7.75), while Calista Nephew ’26 and Clara Romero ’25 led a strong effort from the distance athletes. Nephew was third in the 1000 meters and anchored the SMR, and Romero took third place in the 1600 and 3200 meters.

In a close competition with their rival, the Tigers needed help from everywhwere, and they got it. Tess Wasiolek '24, who was part of two relay wins and took second in the 1000 meters, was one of many girls to triple on the day.
The team will look to compete for a top finish next week at the SCC Championship. Last year, the Tigers finished third at the conference championship.
