The 17th annual Mercy Classic Golf Tournament, to benefit the Scholarship Fund, was held at Portland Golf Club on June 11, 2009. A sold out field played a scramble format, and enjoyed a continental breakfast, lunch at the gazebo and a buffet dinner.
Premier sponsor for the event, for the third year in a row, was James J. McCabe and Associates, Portland, CT. W. J. Mountford Company, South Windsor, CT was Golf Cart Sponsor, also for the third year. David Generoso and Ed Toledo, parents of Mercy students, served as co-chairs of the Mercy Classic. They were assisted by a large committee of parents, past parents, alumnae, faculty, staff and friends of Mercy High School. According the Barbara Miller, Mercy's Director of Alumnae and Development,
"The day was a success in raising much needed funds to support tuition assistance. It was a fun day and good to see so many participating students, alumnae, parents…even grandparents."
The longest drive competition was won by Karen Erlandsen (women) and Joe Navin (men). The men's division champions of this year's Mercy Classic were Andy Beckwith, Keith Laursen, Scott Marks and Jim McPherson. Women's division champions were members of the Mercy High School Class of 2009 golf team: Kaitlyn Guptill, Katie Mischke, Kathryn Satagaj and Molly Scott. Mercy's Golf Coach, Peter Golanski, who recently won the 200th match of his coaching career, was among the players.
Mercy alumna Jada Waters, class of 2003, addressed the golfers and thanked the sponsors during the dinner. She recounted how she would not have been able to attend Mercy had it not been for the scholarship program. Upon her graduation, she received her undergraduate degree as well as her masters degree, and is now pursuing her doctorate. To a standing ovation, she credited Mercy with giving her the support and confidence she needed to become the first in her family to graduate from college and the inspiration to pursue a career in non-profit management so she can give back to others in the community.
